  • Keeping the fires burning

    Backyard burning

    Ever managed or maintained a fire in a hearth or campfire?

    If you’ve managed to get a fire going, then you know that continually feeding it is the best way to keep it going. The flame never stops, so you never have to relight the fire. This, of course, requires frequent attention and care.

    Somewhat harder is restarting a fire from hot coals or embers. As long as you’ve got tinder, kindling, and fuel, you can get it going again with less effort than starting a fire from scratch. Letting a fire die down to coals and then relighting it lets you take some time off from it to go do other things, but does require you to check in and rebuild it.

    The hardest is restarting a fire that’s gone cold. You’re basically building a brand new fire, with all of the difficulty that entails. When you go to sleep overnight, often you’re faced with a cold fire pit in the morning – when you need the fire most, when its warmth and utility would be most comforting. The chill you feel is the price of negligence.

    Companies and marketers are no different.

    If you take great care of your customers, giving them frequent attention and service, then you never have to worry about the fire dying out.

    If you only take good care of your customers, then you have to relight from the embers, which requires more marketing resources to get the flames burning again.

    If you take poor care of your customers, then you’re starting from scratch – and the chill you feel won’t just be your customers, but the emptiness of your coffers when your company needs the profits most.

    I love the outdoors and am always happiest when I’m hiking along a trail towards the summit of a mountain.

    This must be why there are so many metaphors and analogies that have an outdoors slant in my new book Amazing Things Will Happen.

    Today, I want to talk about one of the most important ones and that is the concept of You Choosing The Path.

    You Choose the Path – A Lesson from Amazing Things Will Happen

    It doesn’t matter if you are trying to change something in your life or career, the truth is that there are always multiple paths to your end destination. Some are longer, harder or crazier than others, but since you are doing the traveling the choice is up to you.

    Far too many people look to others to make the choice for them or point them in the right direction. While friends, family and mentors will all be willing to share their opinions and answer your questions they can not make the decision for you.

    There is nothing to say that you can’t decide to do some bushwhacking and blaze your own trail, but that takes a lot of confidence on your part and being willing to accept the extra risk that comes with it.

    Looking to the new year ahead, take some time to think about the major goals you want to accomplish. Then write them down and list out all the tasks, no matter how small, that it’ll take you to reach each of them. The more detailed you are, the more likely you are to start being able to see the different paths that will get you to each goal.

    Never forget that every journey begins with a single step, so it is time to move beyond only thinking about doing it and get going! Choose your path and amazing things will happen!

  • Use the easy wins to build momentum

    Turning in a cooking daily

    We humans are funny creatures. We’re inspired by challenges, but oftentimes, if the challenge looms too large, we may choose not to tackle it at all. This is why the easy win is so vital to our ongoing success.

    For example, in World of Warcraft, one of the challenges is to get your character equipped with the best gear possible. Doing this takes a very, very long time – in order to be fully geared, you need 22,250 valor points. Getting valor points requires you to participate in a variety of different activities that award anywhere from 5-80 valor points. On average, you earn about 2 valor points per minute of activity, give or take. That means that fully gearing your character would take about 185 hours of play time.

    You can see how that might be a bit daunting. However, some activities are significantly easier than others. They award very low numbers of valor points, but their time and mental energy commitments are significantly lower as well. For example, running a heroic dungeon earns about 80 valor points and takes about 40 minutes. Turning in a quest for a dish of braised tiger to a pandaren farmer takes about 2-4 minutes of killing a few tigers and cooking them. It’s a very easy win that earns 5 valor points.

    Once you start to gain momentum, once you’ve got some valor points in the bank, then getting motivated to tackle the bigger challenges gets easier. For example, if you want a new piece of plate chest armor, it costs 2,250 valor points. If you’ve got zero, then that goal seems very far off and it’s tough to motivate yourself to even start. If you cook up dishes of braised tiger and other simple activities that net you 40-50 valor points a day, then after a week, you’ve got 350 valor points. Suddenly, 350/2250 looks like real progress. It motivates you. Your mind says, hey, I’m making some real progress here. Maybe I should go run a dungeon or a scenario. Maybe I should do some daily quests.

    You need the easy wins to give yourself that starting momentum and to keep your momentum going, especially on the days when you don’t feel like stepping up to the bigger challenges immediately.

    Here’s the question for you in your daily business and marketing practices: what are your daily easy wins? What are the small activities you can do that will keep you in the business game, help you make progress, and move you forward towards your goals? Make a list of the daily easy wins you can achieve, from inbox zero to writing a blog post, then use them to start your day and give it a momentum boost.

  • Hurricane Sandy: How You Can Help

    Updated: The Red Cross is asking for immediate help with blood donations.

    Hold on for one week. Mark your calendars to check in and donate on Election Day, November 6, 2012. I know the urge will be to immediately try to find ways to help, but here’s the rub of any natural disaster: the greatest needs will become apparent once recovery is underway and the true extent of damage can be assessed. Give responders, rescuers, and people a chance to see how bad it really is.

    If you want to prepare to help, follow the American Red Cross and listen to what guidance they give on the recovery zones. You can, of course, donate to their disaster relief fund now, but there may be other needs that become more apparent only after some time has passed.

    For example, this is the Northeast. A lot of families lost their homes during the hurricane. As a result, they may not have winter clothing. That’s not apparent right now, but in about a week it will be very apparent that they will have critical needs – and the media’s attention will have moved away to the election. So if you want to help, please be patient so your help can do the greatest good possible.

    That said, if you feel that you must help right now, make a donation to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

  • Simple Ideas Before A Storm

    A few simple reminders before the storm…

    1. Write down important phone numbers before you need them, on paper, so that they’re not stored in a mobile phone’s address book. Oh, and find your old landline phone and plug it back in.

    2. Pour drinkable water in ziptop bags and stash them in your freezer. They’ll be an emergency water supply if you need it and keep your freezer cold longer if your power is down.

    3. Charge your devices now. If you don’t absolutely need them, power them all the way down or put them in airplane mode to conserve power.

    4. Find that car charger you know you have somewhere.

    5. Don’t panic. Panic is what unprepared people do. If you’ve prepared, put your panic down and go do something else.

  • Finding creativity in business

    One of the questions I’ve been asked repeatedly lately is how to get more ideas, more creativity, more inspiration in business. The answer is elegantly simple: you can’t. Business isn’t especially good at creativity. In fact, I’d argue that business is the antithesis of creativity, and here’s why: business is really good at systems.

    If you’ve got a system, you can scale the system. You grow your business by repeating the system, by enhancing it, by adding more resources to it – and to do that, everything has to be defined, outlined, regulated, and measured. The people you hire for your business have to be able to pick up a manual, follow the steps in it, and replicate their portion of the system flawlessly in order for the business to scale and grow.

    The disadvantage of systems is that by definition, they should not be creative. They inhibit creativity, because creativity tends to make systems more inefficient. Sometimes it even breaks the system outright. You don’t want the guy on the assembly line getting creative (which is why we’ve replaced many of them with robots who can’t be creative). In order for there to be changes to a system, new creative ideas must come from people who are allowed to make changes, the changes have to be tested, proofed, and then put into production. The catch is that many of the folks who are in leadership positions in companies are products of the system they worked their way through, and thus they’ve had the creativity beaten out of them.

    This is why you see the boom/bust cycle in companies and industries. Small company has a great idea, gets big, gets stagnant, withers, and gets overtaken by a new company that has fewer restrictions on its creativity. The cycle repeats itself endlessly. The exception are companies where you have leaders who are willing and eager to have things broken, to be in a perpetual state of inefficiency in order to maintain creative market advantage. Look at the biggest enduring names in business like Apple, Google, GE, Ford Motor Company, etc. and you see companies that are intentionally breaking things in order to stay ahead of the startups.

    So how do you create more creativity, if you’re not going to find it in business or you don’t work for a company willing to break things? You have to look outside of business. Look into fields where creativity is mandated. Look at art, music, literature, dance, performing arts, even some martial arts. Play video games that have great stories and amazing art.

    Creativity functions a lot like a water well. A well is only as good as the environment around it – so if it never rains, if water never enters in the area, you can tap out a well fairly fast and then have to spend a lot of time digging deeper for diminishing returns. If the environment is rich with sources of water, the well replenishes quickly. That’s what you have to do with your creative well – flood yourself with sources of other inspiration, then pick the things that resonate most with you and your business and import them into your business.

    Here’s a small but real example from my work at WhatCounts. There’s an app called Paper by FiftyThree Software that lets you do pencil and ink sketches on your iPad. I’m rather fond of it, and one day while I was putting together an issue of the newsletter, I found I was struggling with finding an appropriate graphic on Flickr for one of the section images. On a whim, I pulled out my iPad and drew the idea instead:

    And suddenly the newsletter got a whole lot better, because now instead of the same generic stock photographs, it had hand-drawn original art.

    And so on. A bit of art from the outside drastically improved a business system inside.

    The reality is that nearly every human being is born with creativity. Our minds in the first few years are as creative as they are exploratory, and it’s only through schooling and systematization that we forget we are creative creatures. Go back through your childhood and try to recall the areas of the arts that you loved as a kid and see if now, today, you can reawaken that part of you, fan the embers back into a fire, and then shine the fire’s light into the darkened heart of your business.

  • What you find at the end of the path

    11 years on the path

    Over the weekend, I had the privilege to attend the 15th and final New England Warrior Camp, a previously-annual event held by Ken Savage of the Winchendon Martial Arts Center and one of the finest martial arts training opportunities ever to be held. I’ve managed to attend 14 out of the 15 years and it’s always been of tremendous benefit to my personal growth.

    There were many lessons over the weekend, but one especially powerful and useful one I think is worth sharing immediately. Know and revisit your personal places of power as often as you can. For example, there’s a place up in the woods of Sudbury where I took my black belt test. It’s a powerful place to me, where so much energy burned away the parts of me I wanted to leave behind. Whenever you have doubts about yourself, about what you’re capable of, go back to your places of power, places of great accomplishment, and discard your self-doubt.

    Ken has this wonderful comparison of life as a wheel. Imagine taking a calendar and seeing it as a wheel; every full turn of the wheel is a year’s time. We forget often that even though the wheel turns and we see another month’s name appear, we’re a year further down the path than we were the last time we saw that month name appear.

    Now, 15 years later, we’re at the end of this particular path, and I found someone there waiting for me that I didn’t expect to meet: me, today. If you had asked me 15 years ago what my future would look like, I would have been completely wrong on virtually every count. If you had asked me whether I thought I would have earned my black belt, spoken in front of thousands of people and taught digital marketing to tens of thousands of people online, had a wonderful home with great family and friends, I would likely have thought you were more than a little crazy.

    I thank my teachers like Ken Savage and Mark Davis of the Boston Martial Arts Center for helping me explore, challenge, and develop not only my warrior spirit, but me as a human being. This path has come to an end, the path of New England Warrior Camp. Now it’s up to us to find the path for ourselves going forward and share it with those who want to travel it.

    Here’s the good news, if you think that the martial path might be for you: there are plenty of places to find it, especially in the New England area.

  • Our conditions define us

    I was reading with interest last night about the mayor of Phoenix taking the SNAP challenge, in which he lived on the same budget as any family using SNAP (Supplementary Nutritional Assistance Program, or food stamps). The challenge is effectively to live on $4.16 per day of food. His comments on Day 4 of the challenge were what got me thinking:

    “OK- ran out the door today with no time to scramble eggs or even make a sandwich. So I’m surviving on an apple and handful of peanuts, and the coffee I took to the office until dinner. I’m tired, and it’s hard to focus. I can’t go buy a sandwich because that would be cheating- even the dollar menu at Taco Bell is cheating. You can’t use SNAP benefits at any restaurants, fast food or otherwise. I’m facing a long, hungry day and an even longer night getting dinner on the table, which requires making EVERYTHING from scratch on this budget. It’s only for a week, so I’ve got a decent attitude. If I were doing this with no end in sight, I probably wouldn’t be so pleasant.”

    Stanton experienced first-hand what psychologist Abraham Maslow described as the hierarchy of needs in 1943. When you’re in survival mode, you don’t have the mental bandwidth to do much more than keep on grinding until the next day.

    In many respects, poverty is a set of conditions. It’s absolutely a mindset, but that mindset is defined by the conditions around you, which is why people can’t just “not be poor” despite what some politicians in Washington might think. We live in an age where mental acuity is one of the defining factors of success. If you cannot get adequate nutrition, fitness, and sleep, your acuity suffers, and over the long term, your career and life suffer. More important, it becomes increasingly difficult for you to escape poverty the longer you’re in poor conditions.

    The easiest comparison is gardening. If you plant even the best quality seeds in arid sand, you’re not getting a garden, period. Conversely, if you plant a relatively average pack of seeds bought at the local big box store in good soil with the right amounts of sunlight and water, you’ll have a nice garden. Yes, some of the seeds will be duds, but the majority of them will do okay, and a few will really explode.

    If you’ve ever owned a dog, you know this to be true as well. The sweetest breed of dog will still lash out and hate humans when it’s abused. Conversely, dogs with a reputation as being vicious will be total softies in a home where all their basic needs are met and they’re loved by their owners. Ask any pit bull owner that owns a pit bull as a pet (and not as a guardian) how vicious their snoring lapdog is.

    To end poverty as a society, the conditions in which the poorest people live must change so that they can start to make advances in their lives. If we can change their conditions, we might just get those seeds of humanity to grow.

  • Do you have 100% times?

    On Friday morning, I tweeted this:

    It was just before a talk by Tony Robbins where I knew, in order to receive maximum benefit, I had to be there 100%. I was right – the talk necessitated full engagement, full participation, and no distraction in order to see and hear everything being shared and retain it.

    Most of the time, if we’re honest, our daily tasks in life don’t require 100% engagement. We can get away with sort of paying attention to the meeting, sort of reading an article, sort of listening to a customer or a friend, and still be able to deliver satisfactory results. Most of the time, if we’re honest, our daily tasks don’t demand 100% engagement and they don’t especially thrive if we do give it our all. An incredibly boring conference call doesn’t drone on any less if we’re listening 50% or 100% if the speaker is only delivering at 10%.

    But sometimes, there are opportunities we’re passing by because we’re not dialed in 100%. Sometimes, we miss the chance to deepen a friendship, close a sale immediately, find love, or improve ourselves because we gave 50% and what was needed was 100% for a (comparatively) short period of time. Our challenge is this: to successfully and rapidly identify 100% times so that we don’t miss our chances to get more juice out of life. The easiest rule of thumb I use is this: if you’re there in person, dial up the meter to 100% until you learn otherwise.

    If you’re meeting with someone face to face, turn up the dial.

    If you’re attending a class, turn up the dial.

    If you’re at an event, turn up the dial.

    That means putting your mobile device into airplane mode, putting your possessions in a bag so they can’t distract you, finding optimal conditions nearly to talk and listen, and freeing your body so that your nonverbal language is communicating as strongly as your verbal language.

    Are you giving 100% when it’s asked for?

  • Influence creates change

    Seattle Trip 2010 Day 2

    This week, I’ll be traveling to San Francisco to speak and share at Dreamforce 2012. I wanted to share a bit of my thinking about the panel I’ll be part of on social media influence in advance so that those who are going can look at the topic from a slightly different angle.

    What is influence? That’s the heart of the matter. What does influence mean to you? In my mind, influence is about change – change of behavior, change of identity, change of belief system. If someone is influential to you, then they can help to create change in you, or just outright force you to change. What they change determines their level of influence. A change of behavior is relatively straightforward, such as buying something you might not have bought. A change of identity or belief system is significantly more complex and shows much deeper levels of influence.

    There’s a huge difference between likability and influence. What we’re calling “influence” in social media many times isn’t. You may really like Chris Brogan or Donna Papacosta, but if they don’t create change in you, then they’re just likable people. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s not influence. Conversely, you may not like or even know someone like Stephen K. Hayes or even the late Mother Teresa of Calcutta to be influenced by them, to make changes in your life, beliefs, or actions based on their teachings or examples.

    Here’s an example of how this goes wrong in social media: let’s say Chris Brogan shares something on Twitter and asks you to retweet it. If you’re a fan of Chris and you would have retweeted it anyway, then no behavioral change has happened. By definition, that’s not influence. Yet many of our online influence measurement tools would declare that influence. You retweeted, therefore Chris has influence.

    Ask yourself this about anything you deem influential: does it create change? If it does not, then it’s not influence.
