    In today’s episode, Brandon asks, we’re really struggling trying to find qualified candidates for open positions.

    The reality is that talent is still at a substantial deficit, right? We still don’t have enough people that stayed in the industry.

    And so available talent that is willing to work for you, is going to be expensive.

    So there are two different ways to handle this one, the obvious way is to pay more, right, instead of being paying competitively out compete the market, you might have to have smaller headcount.

    Right? If you are hiring for five positions, and paying reasonably competitively, you could probably hire for three positions and pay exceptionally well, that would certainly be a big help.

    The second thing to do is to consider the qualifications of what it is you’re looking at.

    Because one of the things I think companies are doing most wrong right now is they are looking for very short term investments.

    And I guess the way I would put this is, companies seem to be looking for employees that are like widgets that you can just pick up like a cog, put it in the machine, and it’s ready to go and boom machine keeps running, you’re going to pay a lot of money for that capability, you’re going to pay for someone to hit the ground running as the cliche goes in, literally every job description there is, if you are willing to invest in people sort of grow your own.

    You don’t have to pay outrageous sums.

    As long as you’re willing to trade off.

    Yeah, you’re not going to hit the ground running, that’s gonna take 3060 90 120 180 days for a person to get up to speed.

    But once they do, then a you’ve helped advance their career.

    B, they might have a bit more loyalty to you, because you’ve clearly shown you’re willing to invest in them.

    And see, it opens up the candidate pool considerably.

    Instead of looking for somebody with, you know, three to five years experience, what would it look like? For you to identify someone really smart, really eager? Good attitude, strong aptitude, but no experience? What would it look like to hire a person like that? And if you have to pay the hit the ground running person, $100,000 a year? Could you find somebody who truly is entry level, start them off at 60? And say, Look, we know it’s going to take us six months to get speed, right? But as you do as you grow into the role, will teach you what you need to know as long as you’re capable of thinking as long as you’re self directed and motivated.

    As long as you can follow directions and ask questions when you get stuck.

    We can make this roll work for you.

    Like I said, that opens up the candidate pool considerably.

    When you look at the number of people who could work for you, but don’t necessarily because of your current requirements.

    Changing to a instead of a hunting strategy, more of a farming strategy, right instead of trying to find the the perfect deer in a rough winter.

    Maybe you farmed all summer, and now you’ve got crops to eat over the wintertime.

    But it took a lot more work.

    It took a lot more work to get to that point.

    Think about all the categories of people who might have aptitude, might have attitude, but don’t have a stitch of experience.

    Folks who maybe never completed a college degree, folks who are veterans, folks who are in some way impaired but still perfectly capable of doing a job.

    It’s just that they’ve not had the opportunity folks who come from economically or socially disadvantaged backgrounds.

    Folks who come from economic opportunity zones, right? In the USA we have huge numbers of people who are example on a American Indian reservations and things.

    People are people brains, our brains, right? For a lot of the work that we do in marketing,

    this, the physical, it really is just the case for the computer in here, right.

    So what this looks like and where it’s been is less relevant than what the machinery in here can do.

    So if you are willing to broaden your requirements, if you are willing to remove some requirements and spend more time looking for aptitude, looking for attitude looking for affinity for the different tasks, you might find really good candidates who just need a shot, just need a chance.

    And you can start them off as entry level, right, because if they have no experience, they are entry level and you can pay accordingly.

    But commit to growing them, right.

    This is like venture capital.

    If you think about hiring as venture capital, you can pay full price for a company that’s already a hit.

    Or you can invest in a whole bunch of startups.

    Nine of the 10 MAE won’t make it but that one that does, is going to meet your they’re going to knock it out of the park, right, you’ll recoup your investment many times over.

    The same thing is true of people, you’re not going to hire rockstars every single time.

    And frankly, if they’re like Keith Richards, right.

    But if you hire a bunch of folks, and invest in them, acknowledging Yeah, some of them aren’t going to work out, maybe the majority of them aren’t going to work out.

    But taking that attitude of investing, and growing your own talent, dramatically relieves the pressure of your candidate pipeline, when you have open positions.

    Look at internships, right paid internships, paid internships are a great way to identify young talent.

    And it’s a place where you can take hesitant to call it risks, because just because someone has no experience doesn’t mean they’re a risk.

    But you can be more adventurous in what qualifications you do or don’t need, right? Find a mom who’s wants to return to the workforce only part time, right? That may be a great candidate, somebody who has a perfectly functional brain, but has circumstances that needs more flexibility, as long as the work gets done.

    But it doesn’t really matter.

    So I would suggest that if you don’t want to spend a gazillion dollars hiring, ready to go people, and you have a corporate culture that permits you to be a little more adventurous in your hiring that you look at all these pools of less traditional candidates looking for talent in the in the most literal sense, looking for good aptitude, good attitude, people who want a chance people who want to want to try making their mark and you’re willing to grow with them, you’re willing to invest in them.

    Again, when you do it right.

    retention becomes a lot less of a problem.

    Right, as long as once they’re up to speed, you’re paying them competitively with what the rest of the market is paying.

    Once they’re at that point.

    They are much more loyal to you.

    And and again, assuming you’re not like a jerk to work for, but give that some thought.

    give that some thought.

    That’s how I would solve the qualified candidates pipeline issue in the long term and fully acknowledged it’s not going to solve your problem today, right? But solving your problem today is going to require you to dramatically overpay.

    Investing in people in the long term will solve the problem on a mostly permanent basis.

    In today’s episode, a question from my third newsletter, the one that I wish would go away.

    Hasn’t my lunchtime pandemic newsletter? Joe Roden, what’s the benefit of wearing a mask when no one else around you is? What’s the benefit of wearing a coat if you’re gold, whether or not anyone else is wearing code, right? Airborne pathogens, not just COVID.

    But flu, the common cold, monkeypox, mold, spores, smoke, you name it, are by definition in the environment around you.

    Wearing a mask helps to isolate you somewhat from that environment.

    And the better a mask you wear, the more isolated you are, the more protected you are from that environment.

    So if you put on a cloth mask, you know has about like 30 ish percent efficiency, that reduces the amount of particles you take in by about 30%.

    We know with the Omicron variants that that’s not good enough anymore surgical masks of a 55% 55 to 70%.

    And 95 masks, reduce when you’re not familiar with them.

    Look like these, you know, got the straps, the nose piece your finger over like this, anywhere like this, these will get you 95% of the way there.

    What an N 95 mask does is it reduces 95% of the particles that you’re breathing in that are point three microns or better.

    So if you’re breathing in 95%, less stuff, including living viral fragments, you are reducing the probability that you catch any airborne disease, it doesn’t matter whether or not everyone else around you is is wearing a mask.

    Obviously, if everyone around you is wearing a mask, they are filtering their own air to some degree, and they’re reducing the total amount of pathogens in the air.

    So what you have to do is where the fewer and fewer masks are being worn around you, the more the better your mask has to be to counter that.

    So that was an n 95.

    This is an n 99.

    So this reduces 99% of the particles that you’re breathing in.

    And then I think another one’s upstairs.

    A P 100.

    Mask reduces 99.97% of the particles in the air around you that you breathe in.

    That’s really good.

    That’s really really good.

    that will handle pretty much anything.

    So I was in Montenegro recently.

    And the I was I spent 21 hours door to door traveling in cars, planes, all sorts of stuff saying or hanging out in airports surrounded by people 99% of them did not have masks on.

    I did after I tested every other day after I got home for tests in a row.

    Negative on for COVID.

    I didn’t catch any other conference crud any of the other, you know colds and coughs and things.

    Why? Because the mask I was wearing was good enough to filter out everything, you know, substantially harmful to me.

    That’s the value.

    It doesn’t matter what the people around you are doing.

    It’s better if they’re wearing masks.

    But if your mask is good enough, it doesn’t matter.

    Right? You’re screening at 99.97% of the junk that could be infecting you or causing you physical harm.

    But the only thing those masks really don’t filter out are gases.

    Right? So if you are breathing in like radon gas that’s still going to hurt you no matter what.

    There’s no fixing that.

    If you’re breathing in like cyanide gas yet that’s still going to kill you.

    But anything that is a particle, which includes viruses includes stuff people are coughing out and sneezing out all the time.

    You’re gonna get that filtered out so should you still wear a mask? Yeah, if you don’t want to be breathing that crap in and again, it’s not just COVID That’s the thing about part that I think drives me up a wall is that people think it’s, you know, your, the pandemic is, is somewhat receding for the moment.

    So we don’t have to wear masks Well, that’s fine.

    It’s your personal choice.

    But the reality is, you have mold, you have spores, you have pollen this time of year is, you know, it’s it’s summer as I record this, you know, this, the atmosphere is green, outside yellow is green from all the pollen, you have what, five, no 25 strains of influenza, you have four other types of coronaviruses, which are common colds, you still have COVID and stuff.

    When you wear a mask, particularly in like a grocery store or in other crowded indoor place, you ain’t getting any of that.

    Right? You’re not bringing in any of those harmful things, whether or not there’s a vaccine for it, whether or not it is life threatening.

    It’s a convenience thing, right.

    And the irony is, the better the mask is a the more expensive it is, but be, the more comfortable it is my pee 100 masks are much, much more comfortable than n95s.

    They don’t they don’t sit on or near my nose, there’s a lot of room to breathe.

    If you want to go crazy, you could have like a powered air purifying respirator have like the full faceplate and stuff.

    It may come a day when we need that.

    But for right now, you don’t need that.

    If you want to wear the safest mask possible, particularly if you you or someone you live with is immune compromised, where p 100.

    Mask and you will be surprised at just how comfortable it is how long you can wear them.

    I had my P 100.

    On on the plane and I was able to sleep in it.

    Right It was that comfortable? So that’s the answer to that question.

    Yes, there is benefit to wearing a mask regardless of what other people are doing around you.

    Right? There’s benefit to wearing something that filters out the surrounding air.

    If it’s cigarette smoke or weed or you know, whatever wildfires.

    I mean, I’ve been carrying a mask with me like eight years.

    Every time I go to the west coast in America at something’s on fire.

    So the and I remember as it was one conference, went out for about an hour outside of my hotel and came back in my normally white mask to start to turn a little bit gray from the wildfire smoke.

    These masks are super handy.

    In fact, now is the best time to stock up on like n95 masks because there’s a ton of supply.

    And a whole bunch of people are like well, we’re done wearing masks like you can get them at a pretty decent bargain so stock up.

    Anyway.

    In today’s episode, I got a piece of paper mail from the State of Ohio recommending that business leaders should be relocating their businesses to Ohio. And they make some claims in here about having a thriving economy. Low tax rates lots of innovation, et cetera.

    Now, here’s the thing. A lot of business communication is focused around taxes, right? It’s cheaper to operate your business in one place for another. But one of the things that we are all struggling with right now as businesses is employees. Right? Finding employees that are qualified. Finding places for our employees to live, which are aligned with the values that our employees have.

    Now, we are my company is a Massachusetts based company. So let’s compare a few data points about Ohio and Massachusetts and see if Ohio is actually a better place to do business. Massachusetts has an 8% tax rate on businesses for any amount of revenue. Ohio’s a 0.26. Right. So they have they do have lower taxes, but taxes are one of those things that they like subscriptions.

    Right. Like Netflix and Hulu and stuff like that. You get what you pay for some services cost more, but you get more for your dollar. Netflix has a lot of content. Amazon Prime, not as much content. And then there’s all the little ones and twosies like, you know, Paramount Plus and stuff like that. So what do you get in Massachusetts?

    What’s included in the Massachusetts subscription that is not included in the Ohio subscription? Well, this there’s three things I think, that are relevant. Number one, talent itself. If you look at the U.S. News and World Reports rankings for education, Massachusetts is rated in for education and number two in America. And it is one of the best states for higher education for all forms of education.

    Ohio is rated number 31. Right. So your talent pool there, at least from a broad education basis, is much lower Right. So you’re going to have a harder time attracting talented workers there than you would finding them than you would in Massachusetts. That’s number one. Number two, on a absolute basis, Ohio is number ten in America for mass shootings.

    Massachusetts is like number 35. Right. It’s way the heck down on a percentage population basis. Ohio is number 16. Number 15 in America. For mass shootings. Massachusetts on a percentage basis is number 36. So Ohio is less safe as a place to live because you’re more likely to get shot there in mass shootings, which is generally bad. And finally, from a social perspective, we’re going to use HRC the Human Rights Campaign’s data about the laws around nondiscrimination and equality.

    Now, HRC focuses mostly on things like gender identity LGBTQ friendliness, but the Venn diagram of discrimination and hate crimes against gay people and racism and sexism and etc. is basically a circle. Right. If a place is discriminatory against one class of minority they’re discriminatory against everyone that is not in the majority. There are very few exceptions to that rule, the very, very tightly knit Venn diagram.

    So how does Massachusetts and Ohio compare? Massachusetts has virtually all pro equality laws like second parent adoption, surrogacy, laws, foster parent training required, foster care nondiscrimination. It has no anti-equality laws like prohibition of surrogacy or laws against sodomy laws against criminalizing HIV and AIDS. It has tons of pro equality laws for hate crimes. So enumerated hate crimes laws mandatory reporting of statistics.

    Nondiscriminatory laws are employment, housing, public accommodations, education, adoption, foster care. It has no religious refusal exemptions. It allows. Massachusetts has a ton of laws against anti-bullying for all sorts of things LGBTQ inclusiveness, no laws against transgender exclusions in sports and things like that, and inclusive health care laws for pretty much everybody. And people like transgender folks are not excluded in Medicaid coverage.

    So from a equality perspective, from a a social good perspective, Massachusetts is doing pretty well. Ohio, on the other hand, pretty much everything that Massachusetts does, Ohio does not do. For example, there’s no second parent adoption laws. There’s no hate enumerated hate crime laws. There’s no mandatory reporting of hate crime statistics. Right. HIV and AIDS are still criminalized in Ohio.

    There is no equality laws for employment, housing, public accommodations, education, adoption. There are no anti-bullying laws for most categories. Transgender people are excluded in state Medicaid coverage. Transgender people are excluded from receiving appropriate state I.D. So if all you care about is pure profit and nothing else. Yeah, I guess Ohio would be a better place to do business because you’re going to pay less in taxes at a state level.

    But in terms of providing the kind of environment where your employees would want to live and work Especially younger employees, because something like 5% of Generation Z identifies as transgender Ohio is a terrible place compared to Massachusetts. I would not want to raise my family there. Not with the lack of laws and protections. It has more mass shootings.

    It has lower education. I wouldn’t put my business there not not for lower taxes because as I said, taxes are subscriptions. You get what you pay for. Massachusetts has higher taxes. It has higher personal taxes. It has higher business taxes. But you’re paying those taxes for a reason. You’re buying something with them. It’s not paying taxes to the government and then vanishes into a black hole.

    You’re paying taxes to get stuff Better laws, better enforcement of law, safer schools, safer everywhere, more restrictions on what people can do with their firearms. And yeah, this is definitely a a political perspective. If you are in the population of people who likes having laws against transgender people getting Medicaid. If you’re the kind of person who likes having a place where there are more mass shootings because there’s there’s much more gun ownership, then Ohio is the place for you, right?

    It is definitely a place for people who want a certain outlook on life for my business and my family and stuff is not a good fit for me. And I would question the wisdom of sending out this kind of mailing to businesses in Massachusetts, particularly Massachusetts cities, because we tend to cities in general. The Massachusetts cities especially tend to be much more liberal because you know what you’re getting, right?

    You know what you’re getting when you pay higher taxes in Massachusetts, you’re getting more services you’re getting more benefits, you’re getting better laws, et cetera. So I think it’s safe to say I will not be relocating my business to Ohio. Anytime soon. And that Ohio itself has a lot of work to do to make it a place where everyone has equality under the law and to make it a place where it is safer for people to live and make it a place where people are better educated to invest more in education, again, higher taxes.

    But you’re buying a better educated population, which means better workers which means more productive workers, which means more sustainable business. And the if you’re the the laws of where you live. Focus on things like equality then you’re going to attract employees who value those things. And those typically it’s not it’s not a strong correlation, but there is definitely an association of people who care about equality and people who tend to be better workers.

    Right. There. They view other people as equal. They view other people as deserving a lack of judgment until you prove that you’re a jerk individually, and especially for people with families where you have younger generations that identify and see the world very differently than, you know, us old folks. Massachusetts is going to be a more welcoming environment for them.

    It’s going to be a safer place for them to live. Um, you know, something as simple as like conversion therapy, right? Conversion therapy is expressly prohibited under most progressive states laws, school suicide prevention policies, LGBTQ inclusive sex education laws, these are things that don’t exist in Ohio.

    And they’re important. They’re important for everybody, but they are especially important for the younger generations of talent that we are all trying to create to keep up with the global economy. So that’s today’s mind readers. I’m sure that some folks will have some interesting things to say in the comments. Please keep it simple. And focused on data as much as you can.

    In today’s episode of Mind Readings, let’s talk about civil society and the great residents action. LinkedIn, published in their Economic Graph News recently, a study on what happened to all the frontline workers. So these are folks who worked in hospitality and retail restaurants, et cetera.

    This customer facing positions. Right. And obviously, there has been a lot of churn in those industries, people leaving for other opportunities. So the question is, where did they go? Well, LinkedIn understandably has that. And let’s look at the information here. We see number one, growth from front line workers moving to other positions, real estate, 15.2% in two years.

    Construction and number two, tech and media. Number three, transportation, logistics. Number four, ranching, farming and forestry number five. Now, give some thought to this. People who worked in things like food service, like the takeout line, like being a Starbucks, going to something like farming, ranching and forestry and talk about a completely different working environment. Well, why did this happen?

    Why did these people go to these places It’s not hard to figure out why. When we look at the way people and I can only speak for the things that I’ve seen in the country that I live in, which is the U.S. just some incredibly bad behavior by customers, people behaving like toddlers, honestly, but with all of the destructive capability of an adult.

    Right. Breaking stuff, screaming, getting into fistfights with other customers and employees, shooting people There’s been no shortage of really bad behavior on the part of customers. And it’s no surprise if you worked in one of those positions, you’re like, you know what? This is not what I want to do with my life. Dealing with a spoiled brat, adult and all of their issues So why did this happen?

    Well, think about what the pandemic did. The pandemic, particularly in the first six months, shut down everything And we essentially hit the pause button. And in many nations, pandemic assistance brought supplemental income to people both at the national level in many nations and here in the USA at the state and national levels. Depending on the state you lived in, what did that allow people to do?

    It allowed them to take a step back, to look at their lives and say, am I happy making $12 an hour serving coffee to people who yell at me that I put almond milk and soy milk in their latte? And for a lot of folks, like, yeah, you know, this is not what I want to do with my life.

    And the reason for that is that pay is out of alignment with the work being asked And this is a really important concept We get paid to do work and paying people more, which is important. Paying people more is also means paying them proportional to the work that you’re being asked to do. So if you’re being asked to make coffee, that’s worth a certain amount of money.

    But if you’re also being asked to handle unruly customers to traffic control, to de-escalate violent confrontations, that’s a separate job, right? That’s a totally separate line of work. And in a lot of cases for your average retail employee, they are wholly unqualified to be doing that kind of work. Right. They should not be an on the spot therapist.

    They should not be an on the spot police officer. That’s not their job. Their job is to check out people’s groceries and stuff like that. And so this rash of uncivil behavior essentially dramatically increased the workload and tasks of frontline workers without a commensurate increase in pay. And even now, as companies are trying to, you know, recruit people, they’re running into shortages.

    They’re running into a lot of talent shortages because a bunch of people have decided they would rather go out and manage a forest than deal with a customer. And to be honest, as a misanthrope and an introvert, I totally get that. Construction, transportation, logistics, farming. These are not traditionally strong customer facing positions the way that retailers So how do we get people back into their frontline positions?

    You may not be able to because the underlying issue is that the work that those positions are being asked to do that is effectively in the job description is not what you’re paying people for. Right. You would need to supplement that in order to win those people back. So, for example, suppose you have a line of cashiers. You also need to have a security guard with a big red button at every cashier station saying, Hey, I got an unruly customer here.

    Please come get, you know, take care of them.

    And you’ve essentially paid for offloading that very critical, very important, very dangerous task from someone who’s unqualified do it to someone that is qualified to do with having a security guard to deal with that That’s how you win those employees back over the long term. One of the great, I think, dis services that we have done to ourselves and our employees is wholeheartedly embracing the term.

    The customer is always right. No, no, they’re not. And an awful lot of the time, the customer’s really wrong. Right. When a customer leaves a water bottle filled with their urine on a shelf, that customer’s not right. The customer doesn’t need to be in the store. Right. And yet these sorts of things happen all the time. So how do you solve for that?

    Well, I don’t know that you can. I don’t know that you can change customer behavior except to draw the line in the sand with extra security guards, for example, to say, you know what? There’s some behaviors that are simply unacceptable. And if you want to shop here or dying here or get coffee here, you have to go back to living the social contract that we all agree on that says you’re not going to be a jerk to other people.

    One of the strongest things a company can do is an adopt a no jerks policy and not just for the employees, but for the customers as well to say, you know what? If a customer acts like a jerk, we are going to reject that customer’s dollars. We’re going to say, you may not do business here because as companies are finding out, replacing employees is really expensive and really painful.

    You lose a lot of institutional knowledge. You lose a lot of culture. And it’s a long process to get a new employee. So if you adopt a stringent no jerks policy across the board management line workers, customers, vendors, partners, you say to everyone this is going to be a better place to do business. Right. For those customers who are not jerks, they’re going to feel better shopping in your stores or getting coffee right.

    Because they’re not going to have to cringe and endure a hostile environment when a customer another customer’s behaving badly. When you stand up for your employees, they will stand up for you, right? They will. You know, the old expression, you take care of your employees and your employees will take care of their customers. And not a lot of companies do that.

    So is the customer always right? No. What I might rephrase that is the the best customers are right. Right. The jerks are not right. The jerks can go take a long walk off a short pier. And what will remain to be seen is how many companies have the practicality and the intestinal fortitude to make that change, to say, yes, we are adopting a no jerks policy and we are willing to turn away dollars.

    We’re willing to turn away business from people that we don’t want to do business with. And in time, that may affect customer behavior at large. Right. Because if you are blacklisted at three of the four retail stores for groceries in your area and you’re not allowed to shop there anymore, it might dawn on you that maybe you’re the problems, right?

    Maybe you’re not the person the company wants to do business with. And maybe you’ll change your behavior. Now, I’m not saying that you are this person, but I’m saying in general. So we lost a lot of people to other professions, and that’s OK because those professions need people, too. But if we want to have a functioning frontline economy, we need to have the rules of common decency bolstered for a little while until people are reminded that, yeah, you can’t be a jerk and still get what you want.

    I mean, you can be a jerk, but there are consequences for being a jerk. So that’s what’s on my mind today. Hopefully your company, your organization, wherever it is, you are already has a no jerks policy. And if they don’t, please feel free to share this video with them and say, hey, let’s adopt a no jerks policy, because that will make life better for everyone, for customers, for vendors, partners, and especially employees.

    I mean, the the broadcast this morning was a little over an hour and a half and a full 30 minutes of that was spent on sustainability.

    And that was really exciting for me to see.

    It’s something I care a lot about.

    for me was when Arvin was talking about successful leadership and transformation.

    So he touched on several pieces and pillars, that we are going more into details later, but this is the takeaways that I’ve been thinking about, and it’s something that we all should discuss and talk more.

    I have two things that were really interesting.

    One was use of blocks came to provide transparency up through your supply chain, that was really important given how so many things like sustainability initiatives are based on knowing what’s happening throughout the value chain.

    And the other one I was really happy to hear about was the Citizens Bank talk where folks talking about the future of cryptocurrencies and stuff and you know, the, how it’s going to be made boring, which is a good thing, because once something is no longer technologically interesting, and becomes societally useful, and, you know, hearing that we’re going to get away from the wild west and you know, random cartoons of apes being sold for $30 million dollars into here’s an actual use for the technology that might benefit people and could potentially justify the enormous energy usage of platforms.

    JJ Asghar 10:48

    Well, you know, there’s a lot of jokes, I can go from there, but we’re not we’re not gonna go down path.

    We’re gonna go over to Craig, what grabbed you? What What was interesting to you?

    Craig Mullins 10:57

    Yeah, I think the main thing for me was that imbued in everything that was being discussed was data.

    And even you know, you look at the sustainability conversation.

    And they asked, you know, where do you start? And the answer was always start with data.

    And I think that’s a good answer.

    There’s a lot underneath that that really needs to be discussed.

    And the one thing I always hear is, you go into an organization and they say, we treat data as a corporate asset, then you look at how they treat data, and they’re just filthy liars.

    So I think there’s a lot to discuss there.

    JJ Asghar 11:36

    Steven Perva 11:38

    Yeah, so for me, I want to talk a lot about modernization, I feel like monetization was was a topic that kind of was a facet of almost everything that people were speaking about, for me, especially working in the mainframe space, that’s kind of my weapon of choice, I find that that modernization is, is just a piece that, that flows across the whole thing.

    The culture aspect of modernization is really important to me, especially as somebody with with a with a few less gray hairs as a lot of my peers.

    JJ Asghar 12:10

    Jason, how about you? What was the thing that grabbed you about this view this morning?

    Jason Juliano 12:18

    Just a comment on that, Steve, real quick.

    I remember when I was at bank in New York, we were modernizing across.

    Yeah, the mainframe to the as 400 moving to AI series.

    So mario is modernization has always been around.

    But what resonated really well with me was, as Gabriela mentioned, our arvense talk on digital transformation, the culture change, how businesses need to adapt to, you know, AI, automation, sustainability.

    And then you have sustainability being very integrated into everyone’s ESG plans, especially this year.

    JJ Asghar 13:08

    Oh, sure.

    Yeah, let’s do it.

    Luke Schantz 13:10

    I didn’t realize I got to.

    Well, I would have to concur that it was very interesting that sustainability was such a big part of the message.

    And I think that we all know that there’s, you know, there’s lots of issues, and there’s lots of things we’ve been dealing with.

    And I think what’s clearly this is important to society.

    And I think it’s important, you know, we’d like to think that companies always want to do the right thing, but we know that they’re driven by constraints.

    And I think we’ve reached, we have reached a breaking point, if we see such a large portion of such a high profile event, dealing with that topic, I think we can see that it’s important, you know, all the way through the end users and the consumers that are using whatever app they want to, you know, they want to have a ensure that the future is going to be there and that we can have sustainability.

    And I think that that has trickled back and it’s really starting to penetrate the bones of, you know, the established organizations like IBM, so I was super excited about that as well.

    Jason Juliano 14:09

    Just tying back to that, you know, having like, if you’re looking leveraging technologies, right, so even with the blockchain, you know, creating these ESG, Blockchain environments where, you know, you could actually, you know, track product carbon footprints across the supply chain, and, you know, doing like a deeper look into all your suppliers and scoring them and, you know, being 100% Transparent across that data flow.

    Elizabeth Joseph 14:40

    Yeah, and another thing that was mentioned that was really fascinating to me was that, apparently, plant genetics are more complicated than humans.

    They said like the difference between two strings of corn could be as much as like between a human and a chimp.

    And that was like, wow, that’s, that’s really something but one of the things that they’re doing as a result is they’re using like AI and machine learning to analyze the gene and find out the relationships.

    So when they do their modifications for sustainable farming and the newer variants that they’re creating, like they they know what to tweak, because it’s not always obvious.

    And that was I was blown away by that.

    I was like that is an amazing use of these machine learning technology.

    Christopher Penn 15:19

    What one of the interesting things about that the keynote, I thought was interesting that was omitted, was there wasn’t actually a lot of talk about AI and machine learning as a an area of focus, right? It’s we’re now at the point where it’s baked into everything.

    Is there just sort of implicit? Oh, yeah, there’s there’s a machine learning in here too.

    Luke Schantz 15:40

    Yeah, the hype cycle, I feel like everybody was really focused on those kinds of buzzwords in the beginning, and now we’re getting to this.

    What do they call it? The

    Craig Mullins 15:50

    there’s like the productivity hacks.

    Luke Schantz 15:53

    That’s exactly what I was looking for.

    Yeah, we’re getting to that plateau of productivity where it’s, it’s really starting to come into use, and it’s not just the buzzword that gets your attention.

    It’s what you’re doing with it.

    Steven Perva 16:04

    Yeah, I’m not sure who it was, but said that once the technology starts to get boring, it becomes more pragmatic.

    Right.

    Clay Shirky? Yeah, I think that I think that that we see that in the management of systems space as well, right.

    AI Ops is a piece of is, is a thing that’s kind of becoming more relevant today.

    We’re, we’re, we’re monitoring systems, as they as they go on to see, are we compliant? That’s a good piece of the picture, are we on the verge of some major issue that is going to reduce availability, that’s something that that truly fascinates me.

    And, and as this becomes normalized, like you were saying, we’re seeing it just become what people I’d like that people like to refer to as table stakes, right? It’s just just a part of the equation that’s always been there.

    Much like, modernization, like chasing got me on.

    JJ Asghar 16:51

    So we have some of the smartest people in the industry on this, this call, right? Or this zoom right? Or whatever it is, whatever you want to call it this way we’re talking right now.

    And I want to take a quick step back.

    And I want to ask the whole AI ecosystem, like tactically speaking, how do we, how do you engage in this world? Like, do you just just start it? Like, I’m gonna just do AI tomorrow? Or is there like a, how do you how do we, how do we build this into our narratives as just a? Will we engineer like myself?

    Christopher Penn 17:27

    Well, so.

    So go ahead, Greg.

    Craig Mullins 17:33

    Okay, yeah, I wasn’t really going to say anything there.

    But I think, you know, it’s not something where you can just sit down and do AI, you there’s a lot that you got to learn.

    And I think you need to immerse yourself in the literature and understand what AI actually is.

    When I look at some of the things that people tend to call AI, it gets that the marketer sees who AI is popular, something I’ve been doing for 30 years is now AI, and that’s not the case.

    So digging in and figuring out what you have to do in terms of building a model on what is that creation of the model relying upon, and hey, it’s me.

    So that’s data, right? And there’s a lot that you can do to be shoring up, what it is you have that you’re gonna put AI on top of, and you put AI on top of bad data, you’re gonna get bad decisions.

    So work on cleaning up the quality of your data, work on understanding your data.

    And you see things like data, fabric and data mesh being introduced, and people promoting them.

    And I gotta say, if it’s got data in the title, I love it.

    But what you’re actually calling it, you know, the fabric is this.

    And the mesh is that it’s like, I don’t care.

    It’s data management.

    It’s all data management.

    And you’re doing things like creating data quality, ensuring data stewardship, governing your data, ensuring compliance, cataloging your data, that’s what we call it.

    Now.

    We used to call it data dictionaries.

    And after that, we call it repositories, and then we call it catalogs.

    You know, you wait long enough, we’ll call it something else.

    Let’s do it.

    Instead of calling it different things over the 3040 years, I’ve been in this business.

    So instead of rushing to say I’m doing AI, why don’t you start doing the things that build your infrastructure that make AI possible?

    Christopher Penn 19:38

    AI is fundamentally math, right? So when you if you take the word AI out and just call it spreadsheets, suddenly, like how do I start using spreadsheets like, oh, no, it’s a tool.

    Right? So there’s four parts to all this, right.

    There’s, there’s the tool, which is, you know, software models.

    There’s ingredients, which is what Craig was talking about the data data is the ingredient right? Then there’s the part So no one talks about which is the chef, right? And the recipe.

    And if you don’t have a chef and you don’t have a recipe, it doesn’t matter how much of AI you have, right? You can’t do anything.

    If you have, like Craig said, you have bad data, you have bad ingredients.

    I don’t care how good a chef you are, if you bought sand instead of flour.

    You ain’t baking edible bread, right? So AI is just an appliance in the kitchen of productivity.

    And you’ve got to figure out the other pieces you don’t have.

    And that’s the part that people think it’s magic, right? No, you’re like, Yeah, you’re microwaves kind of magic to if you tried to take apart your microwave and put it back together, you’re probably not going to have a great day.

    But it’s you don’t have to know how to reassemble a microwave to make use of it.

    But you do have to know what it’s good for.

    And oh, by the way, don’t put a potato wrapped in foil in the microwave.

    After that, go to your marketing department and say let’s market math.

    And, you know, yeah, I think like AI the hardest piece is like, the whole terminology like all this words.

    And like you have to have a dictionary of like, the meaning of like all this new, the old war words and the new words.

    And then you have like data, fabric mash, and then you have data lakes, and then you have like a bunch of like technology that someone that is not a into this world will get lost.

    Right.

    So the criminology is like, a big blocker.

    I don’t I don’t think it’s like even the math, the statistics, but like the terminology itself, it’s very hard because you have to understand the terminology before being able to understand what is happening, right.

    JJ Asghar 21:43

    So, Gabriella, where do you like, where do you start? Like you said, you learn the vernacular.

    Okay.

    Okay, cool.

    So where?

    Gabriela de Queiroz 21:54

    Well, I would say it depends, it all always depends on like, what I’m looking for, right? You can go as deep as you want, or as shallow as you want.

    If you want to be able just surely read, like some news and be able to have some critical thinking around that.

    You don’t need to go further into like, how is the technique being applied or like, what is neural network or like all the math behind, but it just needs to have like, a general understanding.

    So it depends where you want to go and how far you want to go.

    So that’s the first thing.

    The second thing that I always mention is try to think about or get a use case that is related to an area that you are passionate about, for example, so like, I don’t know, if you like microwaves, vape, maybe see if there is any AI related to microwaves and go deeper to understand AI and microwaves, right? So it’s a domain that you like microwave, so you can go further and understand better

    Yeah, I was gonna say already mentioned, the McDonald’s use case, right.

    So transforming the way that we will order food today.

    And I love, you know, telling the story through use cases.

    And that’s a perfect story where, you know, we talk about AI technologies and automation.

    Oh, no, I was just because I think also, as technologists, we bring an interesting perspective to this to our organizations where they may not be aware of the tools available to them.

    Because, you know, someone mentioned spreadsheets.

    And I know, we’ve all been in a situation where we find out that someone in our organization is using totally the wrong tool to manage their data.

    And sometimes it’s really horrifying.

    And so I think I think that’s something we can also bring to the table in our organization, say, like, listen, there are ways to do this.

    And you don’t have to understand the underlying technology, but I can help you with this.

    And you know, that’s really something that really empowers developers.

    And by speaking up in your organization, it also is very good for your career.

I feel like there’s there’s an emergent property here that like, after you’ve done enough work that you can sort of, like get some semblance of, you know, functionality without having to do the work in the moment at that point.

    It’s AI and I don’t know when that is, but it seems to me that there’s, it’s, it’s the same stuff, it’s just you need a bunch of it and the right the right pieces fitting together.

    Typically, we’re saying something like AI once software begins to write itself like once you’re once you’re feeding data and to Having the software, you start creating something from that, as opposed to explicitly giving it instructions like, you can specify, yeah, here’s a list of five algorithms you can use, you know, you pick the best one, IBM Watson auto AI, does a lot of that you say, here’s the outcome I want, here’s my data.

    You figure out the rest.

    And fundamentally for machine learning, it’s, if the software isn’t learning, if there’s no learning involved, then it’s that it definitely is not AI.

    Right? Once learning starts getting involved, then then you’re you’re into AI territory, and then you get into deep learning reinforcement, all the branches.

    But if there’s no learning, it’s probably not AI.

    Well, you know, I think there’s a lot going on in the world of data.

    And I don’t necessarily think I heard any specific announcement in today’s session.

    And I think there might be a bit of misfortune in that.

    You know, in Arvind, he was talking about the IBM z 16.

    Great, wonderful platform, where’s DB 213 That was announced the same day.

    And that has built in AI built in things to improve performance data movement.

    And data movement is one of my key issues.

    And I say that because last year, I was doing some consulting at a large healthcare provider.

    And they had lost several of their DBAs.

    And they brought in some IBM gold consultants to help them sort of transition until they can hire some new ones on.

    And the thing that struck me was the sheer amount of time that they spent moving data from one place to another.

    This was a mainframe site.

    They had about a dozen DBAs.

    And they had about 16 different environments.

    So there was production.

    And then there were all these test environments.

    And they would spend two to three days just about every week moving data from production to test.

    And that was just the de B2C environment that were IMS DB is doing that Oracle DB is doing that.

    And this was just the data that was moved from production into test.

    When you look at what they were doing to build their data warehouses and how they were doing to aggregate that data across.

    I would say they spent so many MSE us consumed just moving data from one place to another and not very efficiently.

    That there’s a wealth of things that could be done for not just this organization, but just about every organization out there who’s doing similar things.

    So you look at what we’re doing with data.

    And it’s great.

    And we’ve got more data.

    We’re doing all these things with data.

    But you can’t take your eyes off of everything going on behind the scenes that allows us to do that.

    And that’s your database administration in your data movement.

    And you know, just a cogs that keep that moving.

    Did you think it was weird? I remember hearing the data movement thing too.

    Did you think it was weird that they didn’t mention anything about data velocity? Because it seems to me that it’s not just the volume of data, but it’s the speed of data that we’re getting, like anyone who’s done any work on any blockchain knows that.

    When you reconnect your node, you have a data velocity problem as your machine tries to keep up with it.

    And it strikes me that that neck didn’t get mentioned at all.

    Yeah, I think it’s kind of my opinion is is probably pushed back against big data and, you know, talking about the V’s, and everybody’s been V to death, with volume and velocity, everything.

    So now we may, we’re gonna try not to mention that.

    But I think that’s unfortunate.

    That is a key issue that organizations are challenged with today.

    It’s going to take us to a new level with some of these use cases and, you know, some risk management algorithms.

    So yeah, I’m, I’m personally excited about that piece.

    That’s, that’s a tough question, which I don’t know much where we are heading to in terms of like, it’s not my area of expertise.

    But I feel like there is so much going on in the quantum space that it’s being hard to follow.

    We didn’t go into more details around quantum and all the advances.

    But yeah, I don’t have much to say about quantum I just see like something that’s, it’s like, it’s going to be incredible.

    IBM is in the front, with with all the technology, everything that’s going on.

    I was gonna mention on the research.ibm.com blog, quantum dash development dash roadmap is the name of the post, but there’s a great post that kind of, you know, it’s more than we could get into here.

    When you see Yeah, yeah.

    And it’s following what we’re used to, right.

    We, we work in these low level processes, and then we build better tools, and we build from there, and we build from there.

    We still need humans or like, even when you compare AI machine learning with the statistics people say, statistics is that, you know, you should not learn the statistics, you should not know, statistics.

    And I’m like, oh, you know, statistics is the foundation for everything.

    So like, so yeah, it’s very interesting, because like, you see things, you know, repeating in different domains and industries and topics.

    Yeah, that’s a discussion that’s been around as long as automation, you know, every now and then when I talk about automating DBA features, people say, you can’t automate me out of a job.

    And I think, well, you know, we’re gonna automate portions of you out of a job.

    And that’s what our whole job as IT professionals has been automating portions of everybody’s job, right? We haven’t automated people out of existence yet.

    We’re not going to anytime soon.

    Ya know, it’s, it’s just for me, it’s fascinating to see, to kind of riff off of what Craig was just talking about, I do a lot of process automation in my job using what we’re calling modern technology in terms of Python and no, Jas on running on Z.

    Right.

    And, and we’re doing that process automation.

    And we’re trying what what I, the way I explain it, is we’re trying to automate the mundane, right, and we get that a lot of people are talking about, well, what’s going to happen to me if this is right, and I say, if your value is submitting JCL, then then you’re severely under estimating your own talents, and you need to focus on what you’re really good at, what we need to do is get you away from doing these menial things.

    So you could do the fun thought work.

    I guess something else I wanted to add, riffing off of what Gabrielle had mentioned, is, is when people say all the fear of AI, what’s it going to do to the world, something that Brian Young had mentioned right out the beginning, talking about talking about AI, was was how AI can bring a more equitable home buying process to people that was really fascinating to me to kind of, to kind of learn how we can automate things that make people kind of not as spectacular as we want to think we all write things like bias, you can automate the machine learning can get that, get that element out there, let’s not have any any bias because the machine is not bias to who we are as cultural or individuals.

    So that was really fascinating, exciting to me to hear about that, especially the whole idea of being able to look at something without someone calling me on the phone or texting me or send me 55 emails to try to sell me something.

    Hopefully the computers don’t pick up on that from us.

    And so people do translations, and then the AI and machine learning, they go and check the translations.

    So it was a nice little way that humans and computers were working together.

    And you mentioned bias, Stephen, and you can automate bias out, but you can automate bias in

    Yeah, you look at facial recognition.

    And you know, white male faces are easily recognized, but not much else.

    And that’s because, you know, bias inherent in the data fed into the algorithm.

    So, you know, if there’s bias in our society, there’ll probably be bias in our AI.

    Yeah, yeah.

    Ethics, ethic.

    Yeah, ethics.

    And bias is huge, you know, just training, you know, a lot of these AI and ML models from the beginning, especially, as you mentioned, Steven, dealing with mortgages and home lending.

    It’s huge.

    So we definitely have to prepare for that.

    The challenge is, this AI is inherently biased, and it is inherently biased to the majority, because all the training data has to come from somewhere.

    And if you want a lot of data to build a model, you have to bring in a lot of data.

    And the majority is always going to be represented in a lot of data, because mathematically, it’s the majority.

    So one of the things that people should be taking a really hard look at.

    IBM has a toolkit called AI fairness 360, which can find on the IBM website, and it’s a set of libraries, you can use Python and R, that you feed your data and you declare your protected classes and then you say here are the things that we want to protect against, you know, if there’s a gender flag, you want it to be, you know, 4040 20 if you if there’s a race lag, it should be proportional.

    But the challenge that we’re going to run into is how do you define fairness? So with mortgages for example, should the approval rate reflect the poppy Leyshon, should the approval rate reflect an idealized outcome? Should it be blinded, like with hiring should be blinded where everyone has an equal chance? Or are you trying to correct for an existing bias and all four are fair.

    But they’re fair in different ways.

    And nobody has come up with an explanation yet about how do we agree on what is fair, because just blinding applicants for a mortgage may cause issues.

    And the other issue we have, which is a big problem with data and oh, by the way, we’re seeing those with social networks is imputed imputed variables, where I don’t need to know your race or your gender.

    I just need to know the movies, music and books you consume.

    And I can infer your gender and sexuality and age within 98% accuracy.

    If you have an imputed variable in the data set like that, then guess what? You’ve rebuilt by us back into your dataset?

    Yeah, so like, crazy.

    You’re mentioning AI, F AI F 360s, open source tool that was created by IBM, and then we donated to the Linux Foundation.

    And so now it’s under Linux Foundation.

    So we donated a lot of like open source toolkits around this topic.

    So AIF is one the AI X for explainability is another one.

    We have art.

    We have fact sheets in there is also the IBM product open scale that you can use in a more like production ready? Capacity, right?

    Yeah, open skills really important because a drift, which is again, something that people don’t think about when it comes to the data has more data comes in, if you started with an unbiased model, but the data you’re bringing in is biased, your model drifts into a bias state by default, Microsoft found out that real hard way when they put up a twitter bot called Tay in 2016.

    And it became a racist porn bot and 24 hours like, oh, well, that model didn’t work out so well.

    But something like open skill does say these are protected classes.

    And it’ll sounded a lot like your models drifting out of the protection classes you said didn’t want to violate.

    At a twitter bot, I still referenced in some of my my talks, too, because it’s just it’s just, it’s amazing story of trying to do the right thing.

    And, you know, it just, it just goes the wrong way very quickly.

    It was it was like 24 hours, it was completely they had to remove it.

    And there’s a scrubbed from the internet.

    Like we don’t talk about this anymore.

    We don’t talk about I can’t say that because this is a I’m making a reference to a song that my kids listen to.

    You don’t talk about? Yeah, okay, you got it.

    So, we were talking about, there was a couple couple things popped up.

    And we want to talk about supply chain, and the conversation around supply chain and how how vital it is to today’s world.

    So Can Can I have someone kind of talk about the thoughts that they wonder, Chris, you were really, really this, this, this grabbed you? So can you go a little bit deeper into what we’ve been talking about supply chain?

    Christopher Penn 43:14

    So here’s the thing I think is really interesting about supply chain is that you don’t realize how deep chains go, right? We typically look at the boundary of our company like okay, if I make coffee machines, here’s where my parts come from.

    Okay, well, great.

    Well, where did their parts come from? Where did their parts come from? At the beginning of the pandemic, one of the things that we ran out of fairly quickly, that wasn’t talked about a whole lot was it’s things like acetaminophen and ibuprofen.

    Why? Because those are made in China, but the precursors to those are made in India, right.

    So a lot of the pharmaceutical precursors are manufactured in India, when India first had its lockdowns that interrupted shipments to China was interrupted, and then you had shipping disruptions in in Shanghai and Shenzhen.

    And that, of course, created this ripple effect.

    But even something like Oh, somebody parks the cargo ship the wrong way.

    And the Suez Canal for 16 days, is enough to screw up the entire planet shipping because the system itself is so brittle.

    And so one of the things I thought was so interesting about the idea of blockchain built into the supply chain is that not only do you get this, you know, unalterable audit trail of stuff, but just from a beginning to end perspective, where does what’s happened along the way, because if you have insight into that into everything on where your suppliers are coming from, you can build models, you can build analyses, like, hey, Russia just illegally invaded Ukraine and 50% of the world’s neon and 10% of the world’s platinum comes from there.

    What’s that going to affect and when is it going to affect us? If you know that your business was reliant on a component, and it’s seven months, you know, there’s a seven month lag and that’s up Like and, you know, in seven months, you’re gonna have a problem on your manufacturing line.

    Because if you have insight to the entire supply chain right now companies don’t.

    But if you have this kind of blockchain audit trail, this public ledger that opens up to being able to be much more predictive about what’s going to happen even as consumer if I, as a consumer could have access to a supply chain, right? And I know, hey, this stick of gum actually has a 12 and a half week supply chain.

    I know Okay, with something’s gone wrong in that chain.

    I’m gonna go out and buy, you know, extra gum now, so that I can anticipate that George, I bought a snowblower in July last year.

    Why? Because I knew that lithium was having supply issues, which means that the electric lawn or the electric snowblower wanted to buy it would be out of stock by the time winter rolled around.

    So my neighbors all looking at me, like, why did you buy a snowblower in July in Boston? Well, because I know the supply chains gonna be closed for months.

    And it turns out, you know, when AUC by the time October rolled around, you couldn’t get snowblowers they were out because there were not enough batteries to power them.

    And now we’re realizing like, wow, this is that’s smart, but it’s, it doesn’t deal with the reality of it.

    So where do we go from there? And is it sounds like you know, you know, maybe this is a place that, you know, AI computers,

    here’s the thing, everybody seems up TPS, nobody gets TPS, right, except for Toyota, Toyota’s never said everything should be just in time and you know, when the last part runs out, the truck rolls up.

    So it is said that should be the case for non essential things and that in the actual Toyota Production System, essential parts are still backlogged.

    Right, there’s still you still carry inventory, you may not carry as much.

    But there is absolutely, you know, some resilience in the in the original Toyota system, if you look at the way Toyota Corporation, does it, if you look at everyone’s bad implementation, because they’ve just read it an HBr business case, yeah, they made their supply chains very, very, very foolishly brittle.

    That’s interesting.

    And you’re right.

    I mean, people, we love to kind of boil it down to a simple answer and think we’re following it.

    But the devil is, is really in the details.

    And I just did, I just did read one of those cases.

    That’s what I was thinking about it.

    It was, it was about the Kentucky plant.

    And like some problem with seats in the late 90s.

    With Yeah, it’s a Yeah, it’s a pain points, but they figured it out.

    You know, just identifying, like, you know, bad food, providing more food safety, for safety for consumers.

    And identifying where that bad, bad food evil like it came from.

    So you came from, like, specific shipping container or specific form.

    That is truly one of our best use cases.

    And like, it’s so visceral, because we all need food.

    Right? Like that’s, that’s the way we live as humans, is we need food, and to be able to identify using using the blockchain to figure out that it was this one in less than a couple of hours compared to the possible days, if not weeks, where you have that bad food out there.

    That’s, that blows your mind? Yes.

    Okay, I get it.

    There’s a lot of work around it to get to that point.

    But imagine with if we started getting all that visibility into the, for lack of better term observability into our supply chains to what Chris was saying earlier, you’d be able to preemptively figure a lot of this stuff out, and then, you know, rub some Kubernetes and OpenShift and some AI on top of it too.

    And then all of a sudden, we’re all making scope snowboarders.com or something like that.

    Yeah, I mean, if you did any kind of predictive stuff, if you have the data, right, if you have good data underpinning it, you can forecast and all For a lot of things, is just getting that data and making sure that it’s, it’s good.

    That’s the hard part.

    And speaking of supply chain and food, it came up in the comments here, it is worth mentioning that, you know, the, the global disruption that we’re seeing now, because of the war in Ukraine is going to severely affect wheat specifically, right, as well as fertilizers.

    And this is going to be a disaster that could affect many places, their food security, mainly Africa.

    So it’s worth mentioning, and it’s a solid point, but it really brings home how important you know these things.

    It’s funny to you know, these things, they seem boring, like, we’re just, you know, doing some back office thing, but really, you know, figuring these problems out, we can actually have a huge impact and create a very, you know, towards sustainability again, but also just, you know, quality of life for people.

    Yeah, well, it’s not just Africa, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, they consume, like 20% of Ukraine’s wheat.

    When it comes to corn, for example, China takes 28% of the Ukraine’s corn.

    So there’s, it’s interesting, this nation is at the heart of Agriculture and Commerce for a, basically that half of the planet.

    And it’s one of those things that you don’t realize how important it is until it’s gone until it’s not operating correctly, they missed this spring harvest, their spring planting, so there will be no spring planting for all of these crops, their seed oils.

    There, they’ve had taken an enormous amount of infrastructure damage for things like railways and stuff.

    So they export iron ore semi finished iron products, all over Europe.

    And we have not even begun to see the long term effects of this yet.

    I mean, it’s interesting as, as much as, as people are looking at the sanctions on Russia, what came out of Ukraine are precursor materials for everything.

    And so you have these ripple effects that again, we’re only now going to see, here’s how this one thing, this seed oil that was made in Ukraine, which would go to Pakistan to go to India, which would eventually become your burrito.

    Burrito that you buy at the store is going to either be more expensive, or it’s gonna be harder to get.

    But you don’t you would know this.

    Now, if you had that blockchain audit trail, like here’s your burrito.

    And here’s the 200 things that are connected to it to make this this microwavable burrito possible.

    And it speaks to companies needs to also have the ability to spin up domestic production.

    Right? Nobody had masks for what the first four months.

    I remember.

    I have a because I’m a bit of a weird person.

    I had a bunch of supplies stockpiled in my basement.

    And a friend of mine, who was a nurse said, Hey, do you have anything because we have literally no masks in our ER, like, yeah, we can have like, you know, the mid fives and stuff.

    But I have military grade stuff to which doesn’t work in an ER.

    And they’re like, how did you get these and like, I’ve had these for a while because I believe in, you know that things happen that are bad.

    You should have stuff prepared.

    But as companies as corporations, we don’t think that way we’re so used to, I’ll just go out and buy it.

    Well, sometimes Russia invades you and you can’t buy it.

    Like you can bring up a visualization and see here’s exactly what this country imports and exports how much you know how many billions of dollars and you’re like, I had no idea the supply chain for that.

    Just that country was that complex?

    But at the same time, one of the things that’s really not discussed enough, particularly with stuff like AI and automation, is that and I was thinking about this with the security part of today’s keynote.

    We don’t really ever talk about how How to deal with bad actors getting a hold of the same technology that the good guys have, right? You know, when you think about quantum computing, right? Well as as Craig was saying, you were talking about something that can basically shatter all existing cryptography.

    Right? How do you keep that out of the hands of people who would do bad things with it?

    Steven Perva 55:22

    Yeah, that was a good question.

    I was in a, an out of band conversation with somebody else is talking about quantum safe cryptography and how people are harvesting data today with the with the intent to decrypt that data and use it later.

    And I was like, how much of my data is so dynamic and move so quickly, that what they’ve gotten already is not still relevant to who I am, say, like, where I live, I don’t move all that often what my social security number is, I don’t change that I haven’t changed my email since probably the day I started it.

    Right? So these are all pieces of data about me that I’m like, what does that mean, for me, as an individual with this, with what I’ll call is like, heritage data, stuff that just not going to change about who I am like, you know, that’s, that’s always something that I’m like, Oh, what is quantum safe cryptography cryptography going to do to save me from that, and probably we’ll be talking about AI is going to save me from someone’s impersonating me and someone is, is trying to do things that I typically wouldn’t do, right?

    Yeah, no deep fakes are an example.

    What’s what spots deep fakes right now more than anything, is when somebody does the audio wrong, right video is actually easy to easier to fake than audio.

    When you look at a deep Fake, fake piece of audio, what the computers always seem to get wrong is they always ignore the non audible frequencies.

    And so you can see when a piece of audio has been generated as Oh, no one paid attention to the background noise.

    And as a result, it’s clearly a generated sample.

    But that’s a known, you know, one of the other things that we have to deal with is Okay, open source is great, but it and it levels the playing field, which means the bad guys also have exactly access to the exactly the same tools.

    That’s a conversation that comes up all the time inside of the open source fees.

    Here’s where, you know, like, those bad actors, they come along.

    And I mean, I make the joke that if you don’t keep keep an eye on your cloud costs, in general, it’s really easy for someone to come along with a container and start churning through for some mining of some sort.

    And it’s literally a container you pull from like Docker Hub now, and it just starts churning away your money.

    So you have to keep an eye on what what the usage is, where the things come from.

    And that expires from open source communities where they’re like, hey, I want to make it really easy to build a bitcoin miner, or whatever, to go do those things.

    To highlight the double edged sword that is open source.

    Like the history guess, that kind of takes us into monetization.

    I mean, I did mention Bitcoin and, you know, containers.

    So Steve, you you had some you had some thoughts around monetization, didn’t you?

    Steven Perva 58:12

    Yeah, absolutely.

    So So for me, I am, I’m always fighting this topic of modernization, especially in the mainframe space, right? People, people tend to associate the term with, with evacuating the mainframe in favor of, say, a cloud platform.

    And I’m always trying to believe it or not my title back, probably just a few weeks ago, used to be modernization engineer, I’ve been going through and scrubbing that right? Because it’s no longer my title, because of that confusion is now innovation engineer, something that really, that really got me that was kind of an undertone in all the different conversations that were happening today, I think, that really excited me was this idea of, of modernization and how, how those elements of culture play into that, right, and how how people who can’t, can’t change quickly find themselves suffering.

    I have a few notes here.

    And as hopefully, as we dig along this conversation, I can continue to dig those up and, and make value valid points here.

    But I see that I see that a lot of it was just simply, if you can’t get your your culture to today’s standards, you’re going to find that adopting new technology is going to be is going to be tough.

    And and for first, especially the younger, younger folks, we’re finding these conversations like sustainability, or finding conversations like equity are things that are very, very important to us, as well as a lot of progressive other folks.

    And those are conversations that we want to have today.

    And we focus on those topics when we’re talking about business success, so So not only Yes, can I access my data, can I access it in real time? But is the company I’m doing business with? Is it something someone that I would want to be representative of right so so use especially with the the Ukraine conflict, you saw people calling out companies that are not ceasing operations and people are choosing not to do business with them.

    This simply this does not align with who I am as an individual.

    I, a business is not just the output anymore.

    And I find that to be to be a really strong piece.

    And I think that’s a facet of modernization, right? It’s the modern face of people how people are doing business today.

    Yeah, that was actually brought up today where they said like, it’s not just about the stockholders are related to like, your, your shareholders, right? It’s, it’s about your stakeholders.

    And that includes, you know, everyone’s from your employees and your customers and the entire world.

    So that was really interesting that they brought that up, too.

    Yeah.

    And so kind of just back on that that security topic, right.

    I think it was Seamus, who mentioned that, that security and compliance and flexibility.

    They’re just not nice to haves anymore, right? So, so back in the back, when when I first started computing, cryptography was was kind of just let’s XOR a bunch of things together, and bam, it’s encrypted, right? Now we’ve got all these very elaborate encryption algorithms.

    And, and it’s just not, it’s just a has to be it’s not something that we just Oh, yeah, we can encrypt the data, we might as well that way, nobody gets that.

    But now that that has to be the standard for everything.

    And that’s something that that people are starting to value more and more right, as I don’t recall who it was.

    But they said, compliance is now a requirement.

    And a breach is a is a big no go people will just not do business with anybody who’s done, who’s not keeping my data secure.

    And they’re and they’ve been breached.

    That’s this kind of a death knell for any company at this point.

    Isn’t it though, I mean, if you look at the number of companies who have been breached, there’s like Target still in business, a Walmart still in business.

    I think we are collected understands how important this stuff is.

    But given some of the things you see, you know, the general public doing and what they value, securities, it’s an inconvenience.

    And when you watch how people behave with security, you know, everything from post it notes with all their passwords on it, to, to being subject to social engineering, which I think is probably the biggest vulnerability we have.

    Security is not that big of a deal outside of the people who are who get fired if it’s implemented correctly.

    Right.

    It was also product, how like governments are getting into this game, too.

    Like there’s laws out there now and certain countries.

    So it’s not, it’s not even that people are boycotting them.

    It’s you can’t do business in our country, if you’re not going to be securing the data.

    And I think that has to be a really important component of this, even though it’s really inconvenient to us.

    I know, when a lot of the GDPR stuff came down.

    We’re all like, oh, but you know, you know, looking back at that a few years later, like, it was really good.

    And I think it changed our, you know, infrastructure in our industry for the better for sure.

    Yep.

    Whenever anyone talks about regulations and compliance, I always have two questions.

    What’s the penalty for not being in compliance? Who’s the police.

    So you know, you can put any penalty you want on it, if you’re not policing it.

    I don’t care.

    So you got to have stiff penalties and good policing, and implement those penalties when you’re against it.

    And unfortunately, a lot of regulations GDPR is not one of them.

    But there are regulations that just don’t have any teeth to them.

    You know, and I go back to this whole sustainability thing.

    It’s great, you know, we want to be sustainable.

    And you mentioned, you know, that during the conference, they said, it’s not just your shareholders, it’s your stakeholders, and it’s a public at large.

    And it’s like, If only that were true, I really wish that were the case.

    But it’s all greed.

    You know, maybe I’m just an old, Cranky man who looks at what’s going on in the world and saying, you know, that company is going to do what puts dollars in its pockets.

    And that’s it.

    And so unless we figure out a way to make sustainability, put dollars in the company’s pockets, it’s not gonna happen.

    Yeah, it’s absolutely true.

    If you look at the stats, that they’re saying, No, where the push comes from is from the consumer.

    If the consumer says I will buy the brand, that is sustainable, and I will pay more for the sustainable brand.

    If if there’s enough of that a company will say in its own rational interest, okay, let’s make our products sustainable because we can get a net a higher net profit margin off of being sustainable than not, but that’s where it’s got to come from.

    And that’s a first world solution.

    I mean, you’re talking about people who are wealthy enough to pay more There are people who are not wealthy enough to pay more.

    And they’re always going to be going to Walmart to get that cheap shirt.

    And who can blame them? Because that’s what they can afford.

    So getting greed out of it is tough.

    And, you know, I, I’m pulling for it to happen.

    But I’m very, very skeptical.

    That’s not what is going to get the board of directors to keep the CEO in business.

    It just, it just isn’t.

    So hopefully, we see the you know, things change.

    And you look at when you look at sustainability as an overall issue.

    It’s like, what’s the future of the earth? And that’s when it becomes a political issue.

    And I have no earthly idea how it ever became a political issue.

    But it’s like, if you have children, you should care about sustainability.

    What’s going to happen to your child when you’re dead? Do you want them to fry up? Or do you want them to live? And it’s as simple as that.

    But unfortunately, greed of people who live right now, sometimes is more important than worrying about people who are going to be living 5080 years from now,

    one thing that is common here, though, that I think is worth pointing out is companies and countries have no morals, they have no morals whatsoever.

    They only have self interest.

    No country ever does something just because it’s the right thing to do.

    Countries behave in their in self interest.

    The world is reacting to Ukraine, not because it’s the right thing to do.

    But because it is in our self interest to have a weakened Russia, right is in our self interest heavy Russia is military and capable of conquering its neighbors that is a self interested thing to do.

    And you’ll notice that like when people watch the reactions, it was only until day three, when it was pretty clear, oh, Russia is not going to steamroll Ukraine.

    In fact, Ukraine is gonna punch them in the mouth repeatedly, that there was like, hey, this could work to our advantage.

    Sustainability is the same thing.

    We don’t we as people will make moral choices when we buy big companies, the company does not have morals, the company only has self interests.

    And we have to figure out how to make sustainability in the self interest of the company to say like, yes, let’s do this, because it’s profitable.

    And, and we can make it work.

    AI comes in good girl.

    Now, that’s a very complicated discussion here.

    And I think it’s also like cultural change.

    And there are so many implications.

    And one thing that we haven’t talked yet in Luke and JJ, I’m kind of like, going ahead, but one of the things I think we should talk that we didn’t talk about think is the whole Arvon, Keynote, and everything that he talked about, you know, the takeaways on successful leadership and transformation during these times, right.

    So I would love for us to address a little bit on that topic, because it was, at least for me, it was such an important topic that he was talking and discussing.

    And it’s something that we see in companies and the whole in the whole environment right now.

    It’s like, how do you scale? You know, how do you deploy? How do you need to make sure that there is a scale on the leadership to in order to do that the other thing that he just said, I think it was very interesting.

    It’s like, it has became a world of show, don’t tell, right.

    And then he said, you know, we need to transform the organization and to be like doors.

    So we need to work with somebody, we need to work with others, we need to work with partners.

    And also important point is like, we need to give the credit, who it belongs to, like belongs to the partner, and in and so on, and he talks about teamwork, so I felt like it was so different to hear from him.

    And not different in a way that I was not expecting but different because he touched on very important pieces that we don’t see a leader talking much specially about people about teamwork about being Doer about giving credit, so I thought it was fantastic.

    It’s takes a little extra, right? It takes it takes a village to be successful.

    And that’s what that’s what everyone was saying.

    And from what I got out of it, which was, you know, we all we all have to meet at the same same field to, you know, build the barn or whatever I’m, I’m extending this metaphor way too far.

    And that’s really where the value comes from, is like, so many people out there working on this, who have different interests, and different different goals, have really built some remarkable things out there in the open source world that we’ve, you know, then gone on to build products on, and we couldn’t have done it without them.

    And I think, I think to kind of, hopefully tie it back and in some way to the to the point we were just talking about is this democratization of of the way we do things.

    That’s, that’s huge.

    I think it empowers individuals to get to get involved in in solutioning.

    Together, that lead somebody who’s who’s not maybe affiliated with a large company that has the talent to to contribute to open source to make their voice heard right to say, Yeah, you know, Chris had mentioned that consumers and countries may be self interested.

    But if we’re all involved in these open source initiatives, we can have our voices heard in that regard, as well, without relying on the corporate machine to do all the work for us, right.

    I think that’s really important.

    Let’s create some fun thing too, because for years, decades, IBM has been like, hey, buy our thing, right? Hey, here’s, here’s a new piece of iron, buy our thing.

    And it’s like, you know, the the appliance store, hey, buy our new blender.

    And let’s create says, Hey, why don’t you try cooking, and oh, by the way, you’re gonna need appliances, and IBM will provide them it’s a smarter way of saying, let’s create stuff together.

    And you’re going to need chefs and recipes and ingredients and appliances, probably from IBM as it’s a better way to thinking about it.

    OpenShift can actually make your life great.

    But by the way, I’ve actually committed to OpenShift, right, like I actually understand that this can be part of your value prop.

    It’s a major change and for IBM and it’s only only for the better

    And it’s very interesting to to hear that, like, you know, other aspects like now attracting the talent that you’re going to want to work at your company.

    If you don’t have these values, you know, you might think you’re making that, you know, Beeline right towards the fastest profit and the minimizing costs.

    But if you don’t do it in the right way, your customers are going to abandon you and you’re not going to be able to have the employees, they don’t want to work that way.

    I’m, I’m fully remote, right, you’re really empowering people to live their lives and be individuals outside of their corporate identity.

    And I think I think the more that movement moves forward, the more you’re going to see that the the incentives of corporations start to align with the individuals more so than it aligns to just flat out profits.

    I mean, don’t get me wrong, obviously, everybody wants to make money, including individuals, but but I think we would like to do that in a sustainable, equitable and responsible way.

    And honestly, they’re just the type of folks that are going to change the world, right? Sometimes we sit back, we see what’s going on in the news.

    We see all that.

    And then we just say, what’s going to happen? These are the people that make it happen.

    Right.

    That was just really awesome to see that right there.

    And a quick few bits.

    I think, I hope I don’t step on your toes here, Craig.

    But opening data to the to the world at large is is the right the right answer, right.

    It’s a big endorsement for something that Craig’s very passionate about.

    It empowers us all and empowers us to make informed decisions, and empowers us to to see things that we perhaps didn’t see before, set our own goals and accomplish our tasks.

    And something that I guess I’ll stop talking here, but the hybrid cloud bid, that is just something fit for purpose, designing the right workload for the appropriate platform.

    That’s something that I’m very passionate about, especially with my work with the mainframe, and the distributed side of the house.

    These are all things that I just just can’t get enough of.

    Yeah, and one of the things that I I’d like to put out there is sometimes I’m calling to work on projects.

    And it’s happened more than once, where an organization is saying we’re working on this project where we want to capture and store this type of data.

    And we do a little bit more digging, realize they already have it.

    People don’t manage their data.

    So they need to really put a infrastructure in place that allows them to do that.

    And really take a look at things like data fabric, and data mesh.

    And these are things that are cooperative, they’re a little bit different.

    Whereas Data Fabric is technology centric data mesh is more process and organizational centric.

    But both of them can work together to allow you to know what data do we have? How do we manage the state of where does it come from? Where does it go to? And you’d be amazed at the number of organizations who just can’t answer those simple questions.

    So some connect cloud pack for data.

    That’s the IBM Selectric.

    Take a look at it.

    Look at what you could do with that and augment it with other data fabric and data, mes solutions, build up your data management capability.

    So that then you can drive things like AI and machine learning and all the other things that we’ve been talking about today.

    When you put the power of quantum machine learning against our genome, we have no idea what it’s going to unlock.

    But it’s basically going to solve a lot of questions that we have about how we function as living organisms, and open the door to reprogramming our cells, right? reprogram our hardware to be better to adapt with our machines.

    So I think quantum machine learning, I’m excited to learn more about it and to see what IBM is doing with it.

    But I think that’s a frontier.

    We don’t even understand the questions much less the answers, but they’re going to change the world.

    For me, I feel like the the approach to changing that narrative is, is one to be very clear about what modernization means when we do talk about it.

    And I think, I think to talk about what the modern mainframe is, and we tend to talk about it corporately, on my side of the fence as the modern connected IBMC.

    Right.

    And, and that, to me means more than just talking to talk, that means more than just saying, Yeah, we’re going to adopt new technology, we’re going to adopt new languages, we’re going to start writing new workloads in these different languages.

    But it means actually walking the walk alongside of that, right, start bringing people to develop on these platforms using these new languages, right, start start pulling this technology out, because as we on the mainframe know, we know that the mainframe is is more more modern than probably any platform.

    Right? It’s, it’s the stick in the ground that everyone measures from.

    And that is something that I think that that that that’s very helpful for moving that forward and making it very clear about that saying, Yeah, this is this is where we come from, this is where we’re going.

    And oh, by the way, we’re actually doing it.

    We’re not just talking about it all the time.

Well I guess there’ll be two main points of focus first, to the extent that you can pivot to data driven decision making, which is where you make decisions with data first, the easiest way to draw an analogy for this is to think about Google Maps or the Maps app of your choice on your phone.

    So first identify what kind of decision maker you are, can you be a data driven decision maker, can you be someone who can make a decision based on what the data says even if you emotionally disagree with it? Right? If you can’t, then don’t pivot to being a data driven decision making organization and recognize that you have a vulnerability.

    Because your competitors who can make decisions based on data, even if those decisions are unfavorable or or emotionally, dissatisfying will probably do better in the long run.

    Second, would be make sure that whatever it is you’re doing as an organization, you are collecting good data, right? Part of the reason why data driven decision making is not as effective as it should be is because you’re making decisions based on data that’s not as good as it could be.

    If you have bad ingredients, no matter how good a chef you are, no matter what how what appliances you own, or how fancy Your kitchen is, or how detailed your recipe is, or how fancy your menu is, if your ingredients are bad, you’re going to be cooking bad food, right? There’s no two ways around it.

    Right? If, if you have sand instead of flour in your pantry, I don’t care how good a chef you are, your breads going to taste like sand.

    And so if you’re making decisions with data and your data quality is bad, you are going to make bad decisions.

    Right? There’s there’s no way to turn bad data into good decision making absolutely none.

    So the second piece of advice I would say is make sure that your data is in great condition, so that you can make data driven decisions.

    Even if you take sort of a middle ground approach what a lot of people like to call data guided or data informed.

    Again, if your data is not any good, even those approaches will fail.

    And people don’t adopt data driven decision making because they’re uncomfortable with their data.

    They don’t trust it.

    So make sure that your data is trustworthy first and that will go a long ways towards reducing the intimidation of essentially handing off part of your decisioning process to machines.

    Right? Not the whole thing, but part of it.

    And again, like the maps example, you still set the destination, right? The data helps you get there.

    But you have to be the one to set the destination and you are in control of what that destination is.

    So part of being daunted by data driven decisioning maybe because you think you have to give up control of the entire process.

    You don’t you only have to give up control of the navigation.

    Probably the most impactful decision I’ve ever had to make is the founding of Trust Insights.

    My business partner, and I, Katie, we work together at a PR agency.

    Katie was actually my direct report at the time.

    And we saw that the agency we worked at at the time was going in a different direction than we wanted to.

    It was focused on objectors we didn’t agree with.

    We found ourselves taking on clients that we had moral objections to, we thought, but some of those clients, their businesses, fundamentally made the world a worse place rather than a better place.

    And so a combination of data points that suggested that the business was going in the wrong direction, plus some emotional points of view told us it was time to take the big leap.

    One of the big considerations to that while there were several.

    One was, did we have something viable to offer the world that would be worth paying for and the fact that the team that we ran was the most profitable team in the agency had three of the five largest clients and represented? Probably 20% of the entire company’s revenue told us yeah, there’s a way to build our business.

    So that we could take the things we learned at the agency, but recast them to be our Central Focus, focus on management, consulting, data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, analytics, and leave behind the awkward sort of juxtaposition of a profession that fundamentally is not data driven, trying to make that mesh with data driven processes.

    So that was the decision itself.

    Some of the considerations that went into it, were things like, did we have an audience? Now, for the last, at the time, it was 10 years, when we were when we were starting to make these decisions.

    I had been building my personal brand, my personal audience of people who went to my website, sign up for my newsletter and stuff.

    And at the time, we launched, about, like, 50,000 subscribers to my newsletter, we felt like, Okay, that’s enough of a pool, that when we make the announcement, there’ll be enough people interested in our products and services that we could survive.

    We looked at our personal savings, our personal finances, we looked at potential projected revenues and things and decided, yeah, it would be tough for a couple of years, for sure.

    That’d be tight for a couple years.

    But there was enough there enough momentum already in place, that it wouldn’t be starting from ground zero, it wouldn’t be starting with nothing, it’d be starting with the ability to bootstrap.

    One of the things that went that happened early on was, as we were forming the ideas of the company, we’re trying to figure out how to do our funding.

    And we actually pitched investors early on for the company, and found that the investment community itself was very reticent to invest in a services focused business, they were looking for product focused businesses, because it’d be easier to invest and see returns faster, flip them faster.

    And two of the nine investors we pitched were absolutely morally reprehensible people, it turns out, they told us to our faces, which credit to them for being honest, I suppose that they would not invest in a business with a CEO was female, which was just offensive.

    And so that, that changed how we ran the business and how we’re going to fund it to basically being a bootstrap business where we would not accept outside funding, Katie, and I would retain full ownership of the business.

    And that would be how we would approach things like the finances.

    And so in March of 2018, we took the leap, and we we left the old company, we started we hung out a shingle, and the first year was definitely tough.

    But after that, we got some momentum.

    We got some focus.

    We really dug into what we were good at.

    And now four years later, we are a thriving, successful business.

    We are we closed our first million dollars of revenue not too long ago.

    We are looking to make our first annual million dollar revenue very very soon.

    Which is not bad for you You know, a business with two owners and and one contract salesperson.

    And the business model that we have now is part software part consulting.

    And so we expect to be able to scale the software side of things, along with some training courses and things that we’re putting together to really grow the business substantially in the next couple of years.

    And again, because it’s funny, those investors that declined to invest were a blessing in disguise.

    Because as we grow the business to being first a seven figure business than an eight figure business, hopefully a nine figure business, we didn’t have to give up any ownership, we didn’t have to, to give away any decision making capability to other to third parties, we are accountable only to ourselves.

    And we get to keep the the the profits, which is also really nice.

    So in some ways, those those investors who said no, really were a blessing in disguise, it really were.

    And so the key takeaways for a big decision is you’ve got to do an inventory, what do you have? What, what data do you need to make a decision? Use your Eisenhower matrix or your Franklin index, whatever methodology take into account the emotions, you know, as I said, one of the big challenges early on, was dealing with taking on clients that you know, at the old at the old company that we found morally objectionable.

    When you start a new business, we codified it’s funny, we codified all the things that we didn’t like, in the old company.

    We said we don’t like this, we don’t like this, we don’t like this, then we took the reverse and said, Here’s what we do.

    Like, here’s what we do want to do, and made that part of a corporate core values to say these are the things we stand for, and the things we won’t put up with.

    Because otherwise, why bother? Right? Build a business that you want to work at because there’s a good chance especially if you’re going to be making a decision like this, that you will be working at it for a very long time.

    The idea of building a business and flipping in 18 months not realistic for most people nor you know for nor for someone like me would that be personally very satisfying want to build something and grow it and watch it grow.

    Your personality may differ of course.

    But that’s those are kind of the the way the story unfolded.

    It’s it’s still being written.

    But wouldn’t change a thing.

    Many things gonna be hard to get when you look, for example, at Import Export businesses.

    And what’s happening in supply chains, metals, like platinum, for example, which is one of the major exports of Ukraine prior to the invasion by Russia.

    That’s a very short supply that impacts automobiles and impacts the ability to make chips for computers, not snacks.

    That constrains two critical parts of major supply chains, they the technology piece, especially, which has all these downstream ripple effects.

    And so what this creates for leaders in their decision making ability is substantial uncertainty, uncertainty that cannot be modeled that cannot be forecast, because we don’t know what’s going to happen.

    One of the limitations of things like predictive analytics is that you can’t predict what has never happened.

    Right, you can predict things that have happened in the past, we have not had a, a, a World War of like conditions since 1945.

    Right? We have not had such a massive dislocation in the world economy at this scale with two large economic players

    in most people’s living memory, and we certainly don’t have the level of data that we would need from past world wars to effectively model what’s happening now, particularly with things like supply chains.

    Globalization over the last 50 years, has made many economies interdependent and those those supply chains now proving to be very, very brittle, and very difficult to accommodate uncertainty.

    So that level of uncertainty is going to substantially impacted decision making abilities, leaders in businesses need to pivot very quickly to figure out how do you operate in more of a real time manner rather than a predictive manner, because you cannot forecast what has never happened.

    And therefore, you cannot make informed decisions in the long term.

    Because you’re working with data that doesn’t exist yet.

    We don’t know how the the Russian invasion of Ukraine is going to turn out.

    We don’t know, if Russia is going to remain under sanctions for weeks, months years, it’s it’s impossible to tell.

    We can’t forecast that.

    We don’t know what’s going to happen with the current variants of SARS-CoV-2, which is the virus that causes COVID 19, it is continuing to mutate, there’s continue to be 10s of 1000s of new cases per day, and every single time a new person is infected, there’s an opportunity for a game changing mutation.

    So that is the biggest hurdle and challenge for companies to deal with in the next six to 12 months.

    Those firms that are very agile, very nimble, and can make decisions that are sometimes strategic decisions and turn on a dime.

    Those companies will do well.

    What we saw during the early days of the pandemic is that there’s there’s resilience and agility.

    Resilience for endurance means that you can survive tough times, right? If you have a lot of cash in the bank, you could weather the pandemic for a good long time.

    But if your fundamental business model is impaired, then no matter how much cash you have in bank, if your cash flow is negative, you eventually run out of gas, right? You run out of money and you go out of business.

    So resilience is only half of the puzzle.

    agility is the other half those restaurants and those businesses that were able to pivot very, very quickly moved to takeout and delivery, for example, during the pandemic, or move to virtual classes online and deliver all their services digitally, and go through a rapid digital transformation.

    That agility meant that they had to rely be less resilient.

    They didn’t have to have a war chest of cash if they were able to keep their customers through pivoting, how they delivered their products and services.

    That those skills of resilience and agility in combination will give companies continued advantage in the increasingly uncertain world that we are in

    And so what we saw we continue to see is that people’s emotions make them incapable of following the data of listening to the data.

    We saw substantial amounts of resistance to wearing masks to getting vaccinated even though the data for both cases was under questionable, unimpeachable male high quality masks reduce transmission spread, high quality masks, reduce were almost completely eliminate risk of catching the disease as long as a properly worn vaccination.

    And boosters substantially reduced like to 99% reduction in the chance of hospitalization or death.

    And yet, millions, millions of people were incapable of making a data driven decision.

    Regardless of what the talking heads in the media and stuff like that people who have actual expertise, doctors presented data in the form of clinical trials, that clearly proved these positions of wearing a mask and getting vaccinated were logical, data driven, well founded, and have now have probably the largest pool of data ever, for a single disease in human history with billions of doses of vaccines administered, and they’re highly effective.

    And yet, we still have people who are unable to meet unable to make effective decisions.

    Because their emotional investment in their point of view, clouds their ability to make those decisions.

    And this is something that, again, this has always been there.

    But the pandemic has truly amplified just how vulnerable people are, to their emotional ties to illogical positions.

    What has changed for the better is in many ways, you’ve been able to identify and highlight and see people who can make good decisions with data, even if they personally are not emotionally happy with those decisions, like not eating out in restaurants, right, that is something that a lot of people take a lot of joy in.

    And a number of people, you know, six years someone percent of the population did make positive data driven decisions knowing the the available data was factually true.

    And so they made those changes.

    And so as we talk to people as we discuss how people handled the pandemic and the decisions that they made, we get a we get insight into how data driven are they? Again, we’re not talking about politics, we’re not talking about opinion, we’re talking about you were presented with clear, unimpeachable data.

    Did you act on it appropriately? Right, and people who did take that data and make appropriate effective decisions? Those people we should be hiring people who didn’t who resisted strongly in the face of very sound data.

    I would not put those people in positions where in any kind of an organization which was data driven, because they’re going to make bad decisions.

    In terms of what has set leaders back the great resignation as a side consequence of the pandemic, when a lot of people who, through various payroll protection programs and unemployment benefits, particularly in the United States of America, but especially in other nations, with more robust social programs, like many social democracies in Europe, a lot of people who had jobs when they were lay offs and stuff had time and breathing room because of the social support the the financial assistance to look at their lives and go, is it something I really want to be doing? And a lot of people discover No, it’s actually not, I can count on several hands, the number of people in my profession in marketing, who they were senior executives, and now they’re like yoga teachers and dance instructors and and herbal medicine folks, and all kinds of careers that aren’t, would not be on a corporate org chart, right to go from senior vice president of marketing to yoga instructor is a big change, but they had the time the bandwidth to consider, this is something that they would rather do instead, that makes them more happy, more emotionally fulfilled.

    A lot of leaders and a lot of organizations found out the very hard way that their workplace cultures and habits and things aren’t particularly happy places aren’t particularly places where people find fulfillment, or joy.

    And as a result, those organizations have suffered mightily in trying to hire people, they’ve had to increase wages.

    And even for organizations that have increased wages, sometimes substantially, they’re still not seeing as much traction because a lot of people just don’t like those jobs.

    Right.

    So there are opportunities for other organizations to come in, and do things like add automation stuff to try and backfill some of the tasks that those individuals did.

    But fundamentally, we’re talking about a massive realignment and what people believe makes them happy.

    And that has set many leaders and many organizations back substantially a loss of institutional knowledge.

    When especially when organizations did layoffs, they did layoffs of people who had, you know, substantial paychecks.

    And those substantial paychecks often come with a lot of institutional knowledge that gets lost along the way, and can’t be reclaimed because those people aren’t in the same profession anymore.

    You know, you’re not going to call the yoga studio say, Oh, by the way, on your next break, could you tell us what the contents of our CDPR because nobody on the left on that team, and the yoga instructor is gonna know.

    So the pandemic changed society very substantially.

    And there are as with any kind of massive dislocation, opportunities to be found, there are dangers and there are things that leaders have not fully recognized have happened and need to quickly because their businesses will suffer otherwise

    Why do you think some business leaders stumble when making decisions? What do business leaders need to make better decisions? Should they be approaching decisions differently? One of the things that we talk about a lot, is data driven, whatever they do different business data driven strategy, data, data driven marketing.

    And what that means, and this is where a lot of business folks do stumble, is that you are data driven when you’re using data as the highest priority decisioning factor when you’re making a decision.

    That’s not to say it’s the only one there are things like experience and intuition and tradition that you may incorporate into your decisioning process.

    But very often, the whole reason for people focusing on data driven decisioning, is that they don’t trust those things, right? You don’t necessarily trust your intuition, because your intuition may be substantially biased.

    You don’t trust tradition, or this is the way we’ve always done it.

    Because the way you’ve always done it may not apply to the world or the decision that you’re trying to make now.

    Experience, the same was true there, where your past experiences may not reflect the present.

    Nowhere is this more true than now.

    And really, anytime after April 1 of 2020, when the pandemic was really in full swing and the world that we knew the world that we had experience around, even the world that we had data around, is gone, it’s gone, and it’s never coming back.

    We know that from things like the great resignation, the pandemic spurred this massive dislocation and employment and got a whole bunch of people thinking about, well, maybe there’s something else I want to do with my life.

    And the employment market certainly shows that.

    So data driven decision making is probably the most straightforward path for a lot of business leaders to take.

    However, they’re not doing it because they don’t.

    They’re stuck in their, in their old ways.

    They’re stuck in their old habits.

    When we consider a decision that we’re trying to make, as business leaders very often there’s ego involved, right? You may look at the data around a series of projects that you’re doing.

    And you may say, Well, you know, this project is underperforming, but it’s your pet project is the thing that you love.

    And so you keep it even though the data says it’s not worth it.

    So in order to become a data driven, decisioning organization, you have to be willing to make decisions based on the data that you have.

    Whether or not you like those decisions.

    And I remember at one point, I was doing this one particular marketing campaign, I really enjoyed the way that marketing campaign work.

    I enjoyed creating the content, I enjoyed promoting the content.

    But the data said, it’s not working, there’s no measurable impact, and it consumed a lot of time.

    And so to be true to the process of being data driven, in my decision making, I had to, to put that project on pause right, you have to kill your sacred cows.

    If the data suggests that, or the data just outright tells you it’s not working.

    In order to make good data driven decisions, you have to have data that is clean, and complete and correct.

    Right.

    Without those things.

    A data driven decision making process does not work.

    So leaders need to have data that they can trust that is reliable, that is correct and complete and answers the questions being asked of it.

    If they want to do data driven decisioning properly.

    The challenge is particularly in marketing, that data may not always be clean, or complete or correct.

    Everybody in their cousin who’s ever had a website form has gotten that submission your [email protected] and we know that that’s not correct.

    So part of the challenges with data driven decision making is making sure your data is clean.

    If your data is filthy, then data driven decision making may not be possible in the same way that if all you have in your kitchen pantry is sand.

    baking a cake simply isn’t possible you can make something that looks like a cake, but it’s certainly not going to taste like a cake and no matter how much you wish it were otherwise it’s never going to be a cake.

    At least not one that’s edible.

    So that would be sort of the big stumble there when it comes to data driven decision making
